How to cut a video online

  1. 1

Drop in the video that has more in it than you need.

  2. 2

Drag the handles around the section you are keeping. The waveform shows you exactly where you are, down to the fraction of a second.

  3. 3

Hit Cut and download the piece. The cut is a stream copy, so it takes seconds and the quality matches the original exactly.

Why cut it here

Stream copy, so it is instant

The cut copies your video's data straight across without re-encoding. A two-hour recording cuts in seconds, and the quality is byte for byte the original.

A waveform you can aim with

Drag two handles on the real audio waveform and preview exactly what stays. Fractions of a second are visible, so the cut lands where you meant it.

No watermark, no signup

The clip is yours. Free for everyday use, and files delete themselves from our servers within an hour.

What actually happens when you cut a video

Flippy opens the container, finds the data packets between your two handles, copies them into a fresh container and rebases the timestamps so the clip starts at zero. Nothing is decoded along the way, which is exactly why nothing is lost.

The one constraint: compressed video can only be entered at a keyframe, the periodic full pictures stored between the cheap in-between frames. So the start of your cut snaps to the nearest keyframe, typically within a second of where you aimed. That snap is the entire price of a lossless cut.

Frame-exact cutters exist: they re-encode the whole clip so they can start anywhere, which is slower and spends a generation of quality. For trimming recordings and pulling highlights, the lossless snap is almost always the better trade.

Questions people ask

Is cutting the same as trimming?

Same tool, same result: 'cut' and 'trim' are two names for keeping the part you want. Flippy does it without re-encoding, so nothing is lost but the parts you didn't want.

Can I cut out the middle of a video?

One continuous section per pass for now. To remove a middle piece, cut the two halves you want in two passes and join them with the Merger.
